FAQs

1. Who is Bridge Dent for?

Bridge Dent supports UK students studying dentistry in Bulgaria, particularly those on English-taught programmes, who plan to return and work in the UK after graduation.

2. Is my Bulgarian dentistry degree recognised in the UK?

English-taught dentistry degrees from Bulgarian universities are currently eligible for GDC registration, subject to standard checks and documentation. Registration is not automatic, but many graduates successfully register each year.

3. Do I need a visa to work in the UK?

If you are a UK national, you do not need a visa to work in the UK. This is one of the key advantages for UK students studying dentistry in Bulgaria.

4. What is the GDC and why do I need to register?

The General Dental Council (GDC) is the UK regulator for dentists. You must be registered with the GDC before you can legally practise dentistry in the UK.

5. When should I start thinking about GDC registration?

Ideally during 4th year. Leaving everything until after graduation often leads to delays, stress, and missed job opportunities.

6. How long does GDC registration take?

Timelines vary, but many applications take several weeks to a few months. Delays are common if documents are missing or incorrect.

7. Do I need to complete Dental Foundation Training (DFT)?

No. While DFT is one pathway, many graduates returning from Bulgaria begin work as associate dentists, depending on their circumstances and available roles.

10. Can I work in the NHS straight away?

Often yes, but it depends on:

  • The role

  • The practice

  • Supervision and support arrangements

Some graduates start in mixed or private practices first.

12. What is the difference between NHS and private dentistry?
  • NHS: Structured, target-based, varies by contract

  • Private: More flexibility, income potential grows with experience

Your first role should prioritise support and learning, not just earnings.

13. What are common mistakes students make when returning to the UK?

Common pitfalls include:

  • Delaying GDC preparation

  • Signing contracts without understanding terms

  • Accepting roles with poor supervision

  • Relying on rumours or social media advice

16. Will Bridge Dent find me a job?

Bridge Dent focuses first on guidance, clarity, and preparation. When the time is right, we can help students understand the job market and make informed choices — without pressure.

17. Do students have to pay for Bridge Dent’s support?

No. Bridge Dent does not charge students for guidance, resources, or information.

18. Is Bridge Dent officially linked to the GDC or universities?

No. Bridge Dent is an independent guidance platform. All regulatory decisions are made solely by the GDC.

19. Can Bridge Dent guarantee GDC registration or employment?

No. Outcomes depend on individual circumstances and regulatory decisions. We provide accurate information and preparation, not guarantees.

20. How is Bridge Dent different from other organisations?

Bridge Dent is:

  • Focused specifically on Bulgarian-trained UK dentistry students

  • Early-stage and preparation-led

  • Peer-informed and non-commercial in approach

  • Designed to reduce uncertainty, not sell roles

All information provided is general guidance only. Registration and employment outcomes are subject to General Dental Council requirements and individual circumstances.

9. Do I need DFT to work in the NHS?

To provide NHS primary care, dentists must hold a Performer Number. Most newly qualified dentists obtain this through DFT, although PLVE or equivalence routes may apply.

14. What support does the British Dental Association (BDA) offer?

The BDA is the main professional body for UK dentists and dental students. Membership gives you access to support, advice from industry experts, CPD resources, contracts review services, publications and networking opportunities.

15. Should I join the BDA as a student or overseas dentist?

The BDA offers specific student and affiliate membership packages designed to help with career transition, understanding the UK dental environment and accessing expert support and resources.

8. Is PLVE still available?

Yes — overseas dentists may use PLVE or the updated structured conversation process to demonstrate equivalence for NHS Performers List eligibility.

11. Can I work in private practice without a Performer Number?

Yes — GDC registration allows private practice; Performer Numbers are specifically required for NHS primary care.
